Changes to the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam format
On the 1st of September 2007 the PRINCE2 practitioner exam changed from an open-ended essay style format to a multiple choice (aka "OTE" - Objective Testing Exam) format as detailed below.
It is expected that the new PRINCE2 Practitioner exam format will mean that exam results are delivered quickly and that there is a greater consistency to the marking. This new PRINCE2 Practitioner exam format will also be more acceptable to the growing international market.
At first glance, it may seem that the change in format will make the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam slightly easier, however a broad knowledge is still required to pass and initial feedback confirms that the exam is very much at the same level as the previous format.
The new PRINCE2 Practitioner exam format
- 9 questions, with a scenario background and appendices.
- Each of the 9 questions is worth 40 marks.
- An overall score of 180 out of a possible 360 is required to pass.
- Three hour duration.
- Open-book examination (only the PRINCE2 Manual is allowed)
PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam
The PRINCE2 Practitioner exam is aiming to measure whether a candidate would be able to apply PRINCE2 to the running and managing of a project within an environment supporting PRINCE2.
To this end they need to exhibit the competence required for the PRINCE2 Foundation qualification, and show that they can apply and tune PRINCE2 to address the needs and problems of a specific project scenario.
In the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam candidates must be able to...
- Produce detailed explanations of all processes, components and techniques, and worked examples of all PRINCE2 products as they might be applied to address the particular circumstances of a given project scenario.
- Show they understand the relationships between processes, components, techniques and PRINCE2 products and can apply this understanding.
- Demonstrate that they understand the reasons behind the processes, components and techniques of PRINCE2, and that they understand the principles underpinning these elements.
- Demonstrate their ability to tune PRINCE2 to different project circumstances.
PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam Preparation
The purpose of the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam paper is to test the persons ability to apply the method.
Here are some PRINCE2 practitioner exam hints and tips to help you avoid some of the common pitfalls:
- Only give the number of answers requested in the question. If you give more the whole answer will be void. However if you give one answer that is perhaps not the most appropriate, you may still get partial marks for it.
- Manage your time. Three hours may seem like a long time but remember there are nine questions to answer. As a general guide, this allows 20 minutes for each question.
- Although you are allowed to take the PRINCE2 manual into the examination you should use it with care. The time taken to find an answer to a question worth 0.5 or 1 mark may impact on the time you have to answer an application part –question earning 2 or 3 marks.
- Follow instructions for marking your answer paper carefully. In some cases answers will be void if not correctly marked.
