About the PRINCE2 2009 Manual
Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 is the official PRINCE2 manual and details all of the PRINCE2 principles, themes and processes that enable individuals and organisations to successfully deliver their projects within time, cost and quality constraints. Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 is an essential reference guide for anyone using the PRINCE2 methodology.
Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 forms part of a pair of publications that are the result of the PRINCE2: 2009 Project to update the PRINCE2 guidance. Its companion is Directing Successful Projects with PRINCE2.
Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 offers detailed guidance on setting up, organising, managing, controlling, and delivering projects on time, within budget and to the highest standards. It includes comprehensive advice to help you cope with the risks and challenges involved in project management and take advantage of all the opportunities available.
PRINCE2 2009 Manual - What Has Been Changed?
A number of new chapters have been introduced to the 2009 Managing Successful Projects Using PRINCE2 manual to explain the ‘Principles of PRINCE2’ and ‘Tailoring PRINCE2 to the Project Environment.’
Those people familiar with the previous version of the manual will notice that ‘Components’ and ‘Techniques’ chapters have been removed. In fact these chapters have now been combined into the new Themes section.
The 2009 version of PRINCE2 will significantly reduce the amount of processes and sub processes; in fact sub processes have been removed completely from the new method. They will now be called activities, so if for examle, you’re initiating a project, instead of having a number of sub processes that you have to follow, you will have five or six activities to follow, so it’s more practical.
The 2009 manual consists of the following chapters;
- Introduction
- Principles
- Themes
- Processes
- Tailoring PRINCE2 to the project environment
Also included are the very useful Appendices, containing product description outlines for PRINCE2’s defined management products.
The 2009 Edition:
-
Explains the principles that underpin PRINCE2
-
Describes the PRINCE2 processes in their entirety
-
Describes 'Key Themes' of project management, specific to PRINCE2, that are required for the processes to be effective
-
Cross-references techniques that may be applied
-
Explains how to tailor the method
-
Provides context of when and how to use PRINCE2 for different project environments (e.g. standalone or as part of a programme).
Like the 2005 guidance, the book contains chapters on Starting Up a Project, Directing a Project, Initiating a Project, Controlling a Stage, Managing Product Delivery, Managing Stage Boundary and Closing a Project.
In addition, the guidance also looks at the wider role of the Project Manager, including:
-
soft skills of the project manager;

-
