PRINCE2 and PMP are both project management certifications, whereas ITIL focuses on digital product and service management. For most project professionals, the main debate centres on PRINCE2 or PMP. PRINCE2 provides a process based project management method with particularly strong recognition in the UK, Europe and Australia. PMP is a PMI credential for experienced project professionals and has a strong international profile, particularly in North America.

PRINCE2, PMP and ITIL at a glance

All three certifications are recognised internationally, but they develop different capabilities. The right choice depends on your role and existing experience, as well as where you intend to work.

For anyone comparing PMP vs PRINCE2, the main distinction is between a professional credential based on project management knowledge and experience, and a structured method for managing projects.

What is PRINCE2?

PRINCE2® Project Management (Version 7) is a structured method for managing projects. Its principles provide the foundation for the method, supported by practices that address recurring aspects of project management. Seven processes guide the project from its initial stages through to closure.

PRINCE2® Foundation is suitable for people at any career stage and has no prior project management experience requirement. Practitioner develops the ability to apply and tailor the method in different project environments. PeopleCert accepts several qualifications as prerequisites for Practitioner, including PRINCE2 Foundation and PMP.

Our PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner training provides a route through both levels. You can also explore what changed in PRINCE2® 7 or consider PRINCE2® Agile Foundation and Practitioner if your work combines PRINCE2 governance with agile delivery.

What is PMP?

Project Management Professional (PMP)® is a credential from the Project Management Institute (PMI). Rather than teaching one project management method, it validates the ability to lead projects across predictive and adaptive ways of working.

Unlike PRINCE2 Foundation, PMP is designed for professionals who already have substantial project experience. Current eligibility depends on your educational background. For example, candidates with a bachelor’s degree generally need three years of professional project management experience; those whose highest qualification is secondary education need five. Applicants also need 35 hours of eligible project management training.

This makes PMP more appropriate later in a project management career than an entry level certification.

What is ITIL?

ITIL vs PRINCE2 is not a like for like comparison. ITIL focuses on managing digital products and services, whereas PRINCE2 provides a method for managing projects. The current ITIL® (Version 5) framework covers digital product and service management, with ITIL® Foundation providing its entry point. The latest version reflects modern digital environments and incorporates developments such as AI enabled ways of working.

For IT project managers, this makes ITIL complementary to PRINCE2 or PMP rather than a direct alternative. PRINCE2 or PMP develops project management capability; ITIL becomes particularly relevant when a project creates or changes a digital service that must subsequently operate effectively.

Someone managing IT transformation may therefore have good reason to develop knowledge of both disciplines.

PRINCE2 vs PMP: which is better?

For someone building a project management career in the UK, PRINCE2 is often the more accessible starting point because Foundation requires no previous project management experience and the method has strong recognition among UK employers, particularly in the public sector. People comparing PMP certification vs PRINCE2 should also consider their career stage. PMP requires previous project experience, whereas PRINCE2 Foundation is open to newcomers.

Neither is inherently better. Your target employers and their requirements may matter, so check current vacancies carefully and consider job location before choosing.

The difference in approach matters too. PRINCE2 teaches a method that organisations can tailor to individual projects. PMP validates broader project leadership expertise without tying candidates to a particular methodology.

For an experienced manager, the choice may therefore depend on the type of professional recognition they need. Someone earlier in their career has a different decision because PMP is not yet available to them.

Should you do more than one?

Yes, where the combination supports the direction of your career. You do not need to treat these certifications as competing alternatives. The best project management certification depends on your career stage and the roles you want to pursue. For some professionals, that means choosing one qualification; for others, combining them makes more sense.

A common route is to start with PRINCE2 Foundation, build practical experience and consider PMP later once you meet its eligibility criteria. For people managing IT projects, combining PRINCE2 with ITIL develops an understanding of project delivery alongside the management of live digital products and services.

PRINCE2 Agile is another option for professionals working in agile environments. Rather than moving into a separate discipline, it brings agile ways of working into a PRINCE2 project context.

Value therefore depends more on career stage than simply comparing course prices. An accessible Foundation qualification may offer the best starting point for a new project professional. Someone with significant experience may gain more from validating that experience through PMP.
